Established in 1964, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was the first university department with computer science degree program established in the Czech Republic. Nowadays, the department offers undergraduate (BSc), graduate (MSc) and doctoral (PhD) programs covering a broad range of courses in Computer Science and Engineering. The main study programs offered by the department are Software technologies and management (STM), Open Informatics (OI) and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EaI) (with major in Software Engineering and Computer networks).

A present time there is 47 members of academic staff and other 37 faculty members who are responsible for general studies in the field of computer technology for all students in the first and second year. Furthermore, they teach advance and specialized courses for more than 600 master students and 19 doctoral students (on both daily and distant studies).
